LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Backed by a goal and two assists from Abby Felthaus, Transylvania defeated the Covenant women's soccer team 3-0 on Friday night in the Transylvania Showcase.
The loss is the second straight for Covenant as they fall to 1-3 on the young season. Transylvania, the preseason favorite to win the Heartland Conference title, moves to 1-1.
Felthaus scored the match's first score in the 12th minute, with an assist from Alyssa Kruse, that gave the Pioneers a 1-0 lead. The Lady Scots would hang with the host team throughout the first 45 minute period but could not find the back of the net.
In the second period, Transylvania added to its lead in the 51st minute when Anne Marie Dumaine made it 2-0 with a goal off a corner kick from Felthaus. The Pioneers would add the final tally in the 66th minute of play when Felthaus found teammate Michelle Schroeck for a goal to make it 3-0.
The Lady Scots had a decent opportunity to score early on in the second half as Ruth Terry sprinted through the Pioneers defense, but her shot at the net went just wide right. Overall, Covenant was outshot 12-10 and 10-6 in shots on goal.
Lucy Johnson, making her second straight start at keeper, made seven saves for Covenant. Jessica Scovel secured six saves for the Pioneers.
Terry, Jenna Vreeland, Anna Porch and Mary Claire Roberson each attempted two shots for the Lady Scots.
Covenant will have a quick turnaround as they will face No. 16-ranked Centre at 6 p.m. on Saturday in Lexington. Live video can be found HERE
