GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Backed by two goals apiece in the first and second half, the Covenant women's soccer team routed Greensboro 4-0 on Friday afternoon in the USA South opener for both teams.

The win is also a historic one for Covenant as it marks the first ever USA South win in any sport as the school is in its first season of competing in the conference.

Covenant moves to 3-5 overall and 1-0 in league play. Greensboro drops to 1-4 and 0-1 in the USA South.

The Lady Scots got on the board in the early minutes as Anne Charlotte Strawbridge netted her second goal of the season in the 8th minute of play, assisted by Ruth Terry. Covenant would extend its lead to 2-0 in the 17th minute when Bethany Logan found the back of the net with an assist from Andrea Hunt. It was also Logan's second goal of the year.

In the second half, Rachel Bernard gave Covenant a three-goal advantage when she knocked in a shot from the top of the arc in the 54th minute, her second score of the season. Mary Claire Roberson capped the scoring with her first collegiate goal in the 75th minute off another assist from Terry. 

"The girls played really well today," said head coach Mark Duble. "It was great for Mary Claire to get her first goal as well."

Covenant outshot Greensboro 15-14 and 10-8 in shots on goal. Keeper Lucy Johnson played the first 74 minutes tallying eight saves before Hannah Bales came on for the final minutes of the match. 

Greensboro keeper Jessica Thatcher made six saves.

Covenant will travel to southern Virginia on Saturday to take on Ferrum. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
