CLEVELAND, Ga. -- The Covenant softball team hit the road for the first time this season on Saturday afternoon at Truett-McConnell. The Lady Scots fell in game one 5-4 before losing game two 10-3.
The losses drop the Lady Scots to 1-11 on the season. Truett-McConnell improves to 2-4 overall.
In the first game, Covenant scored two runs in the first inning on a Courtney Wagoner double and a Chandler Shepherd steal of home. After Truett-McConnell tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the first, Covenant responded with a run in the second on a Madison Quirk double that plated Cori Hilt.
Truett-McConnell would take the lead with two runs in the fourth inning, but again the Lady Scots answered quickly. Covenant scored a run in the fifth inning to tie the score at 4-4 after back-to-back doubles from Lauren Johns and Morgan Lane.
The home team would have the final tally in the bottom of the seventh as the Bears scored the game-winning run on a single.
Hilt (1-4) pitched well for Covenant, but she gets the loss. Hilt went 6.1 innings and struck out seven while throwing 98 pitches. Quirk finished 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while Lane went 2-for-2 with an RBI for the Lady Scots.
Quirk and Wagoner each had three hits in game two, with Wagoner driving in three runs, but Truett-McConnell scored six runs in the third inning and three more in the sixth to pull away for the 10-3 victory.
Covenant struck for two runs in the top of the first with the crucial hit coming off the bat of Wagoner as she hit a two-run home run to center field to give the Lady Scots a 2-0 lead. The homer is Wagoner's first of the season.
Truett-McConnell would score once in the second, then have those two large innings to secure the win.
Hannah Rogers (0-5) gets the loss for Covenant in game two. Jenni Jobe, Johns, and Lane each earned a hit as well.
Covenant returns to play on Thursday when they travel to Birmingham Southern for a doubleheader. Game one is scheduled for 5 p.m.
