Scots' Win Streak Comes to End

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant baseball team scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but it wasn't enough as visiting Georgia Gwinnett snapped the Scots eight-game win streak with a 5-4 victory on Friday afternoon.

The two teams will play games two and three of the series tomorrow afternoon in Lawrenceville, Ga. First pitch of game two is set for 4 p.m.

Covenant trailed 5-1 heading into the ninth inning, but would not go away quietly. David Lockwood led off the inning with a double that was followed by a Georgia Gwinnett fielding error and a Sterling Witt walk to load the bases with nobody out. Perry Rigby then cut the Scots' deficit in half with a two-run single leaving Covenant down 5-3 with runners at the corners. Braeden Lane followed and had his sharp line drive snared by the first baseman who tagged first to complete the double play.

The inning was kept alive by a Paul Phillips RBI single to make it 5-4, but Phillips was then tagged out between second and third on a steal attempt to end the game.

Rigby finished 1-for-4 with two RBIs, while Lockwood went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Will Cleland and Phillips each added a run batted in for Covenant (15-4).

Georgia Gwinnett (19-6) had a four-run third inning off Covenant starter Micah Mabe with Christian Van Camp's three-run home run to right-center field capping the scoring. The Grizzlies led 5-0 after five innings of play.

Mabe (5-1) received his first loss of the season. The left-hander went six innings allowing five earned runs on seven hits, while striking out five. Spencer Smith came on in relief and threw three scoreless and hitless innings and punched out three.

Sheldon Cooper (4-0) notches the win for the Grizzlies as he surrendered six hits and two earned runs. Van Camp secured the win to pick up his first save of the season. Van Camp had four RBIs at the dish and Robbie Payne went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.
