MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Jessie Blankenship had 20 points, Jessica Chittenden added a career-high 13 points, and Kiaira Cooper also scored 13 points but the Covenant women's basketball team could not overcome Huntingdon as the Lady Scots fell 76-62 on Saturday afternoon.
Covenant suffers a second straight loss and drops to 10-10 overall and 3-6 in GSAC play. Huntingdon moves to 13-9 overall and 6-2 in conference play, just one game behind Agnes Scott for first place.
Blankenship scored 20 points, after scoring 27 on Wednesday in a loss to Spelman, on 7-of-16 shooting and 6-of-11 from the foul line. The junior is just two points shy of 1,000 for her career.
Chittenden posted a career-high in points on the strength of 5-of-8 shooting from the floor. She also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Cooper had 13 points, five rebounds, three assists, and five steals.
Huntingdon placed three players in double figures led by Devin Douglas' 15 points. Patricia Pickens and Raven Prater had 13 and 11 points, respectively.
After a close first half of play, Huntingdon extended its lead to 37-26 by halftime.
In the second half, Covenant scored the first five points on a Ruth Gibson 3-pointer and a Chittenden layup to cut its deficit to 37-31. After Huntingdon again gained a double digit lead, Covenant would shrink its deficit to just four points at 51-47 after a Blankenship layup with 10:19 left.
But Huntingdon would go on an 11-3 scoring run, capped by a Morgan Crawford jumper, to go ahead 62-50 with 5:38 remaining. Covenant would not get it below double digits the rest of the way.
Covenant was 24-of-58 (41.4 percent) from the floor, but made two 3-pointers and 12-of-23 from the charity stripe. Huntingdon outrebounded the Lady Scots 45-35 and connected on 43.5 percent (27-62) from the field.
Covenant returns home on Wednesday to take on Agnes Scott in a GSAC matchup. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. Senior Night activities will take place before the game as Covenant will honor Ruth Gibson and Jessica Chittenden for their hard work and dedication to the basketball program.
