Berry Pulls Away in Second Half, Defeats Women's Basketball 77-58

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Freshman Katie Leverette scored 16 points off the bench, but the Covenant women's basketball team could not overcome a strong second half from visiting Berry as the Vikings took a 77-58 victory on Saturday inside Barnes Physical Education Center.

The loss is the third in a row for the Scots who see their record fall to 3-5 on the season. Berry improves to 4-3.

Leverette was 5-of-9 from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers, in 20 minutes of action to lead Covenant. Morgan Woodward added 10 points, four rebounds and three assists while Alexis Storteboom just missed a double-double with eight points and 13 rebounds.

Five players scored in double figures for Berry led by Chanlir Segarra's 19 points. Emma Cook tallied a double-double with 15 points and 10 boards. Mel McLean added 16 points and a game-high six assists. Olivia Harrell and Taylor Johnson had 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Covenant was held scoreless for the first four-plus minutes of the first half that allowed Berry to race out to an 11-0 lead. The Scots responded with a 15-3 scoring run over the next five minutes that was capped by a Liz Dougherty jumper that gave Covenant a 15-14 lead. The two teams would go back-and-forth the rest of the half as Berry held to a 37-35 advantage at the break.

Berry slowly built a double digit lead in the first 10 minutes of the second half and continued to extend the margin. Covenant got as close as 52-46 after a pir of Jessie Blankenship free throws at the 9:44 mark of the peiord, but Berry would cruise the rest of the way.

For the game, Berry shot 49.1 percent (26-of-53) to Covenant's 29.7 percent (19-of-64). Berry also held a slight rebound edge of 45-39.

Covenant will be off for Christmas Break. The Scots return to the court on January 3 against USA South foe Ferrum. Tip time is 5:30 p.m. inside Barnes Physical Education Center.
