MARTINSVILLE, Va. -- The Covenant women's soccer team played valiantly but ultimately fell to second-seed Piedmont 3-1 on Friday afternoon in the semifinal round of the USA South women's soccer tournament.
The loss ends the season for Covenant as the Lady Scots finish with a 10-9-2 record overall. Piedmont advances to Saturday's championship match against fifth-seeded Meredith at 5 p.m.
Covenant was coming off one upset victory over third-seed Averett on Monday and looking to continue that momentum on Friday. But the Lions scored twice in the opening period as they controlled possession for much of the first 45 mintues.
Piedmont got on the board in the in the 26th minute as Laura Goodwin found the back of the net for her 15th score of the season, off an assist from Shayna Rogers. Marissa Akin would make it 2-0 in the 41st minute with a goal that put the Lions ahead 2-0 heading into halftime.
Covenant would make a push in the early moments of the second half. Andrea Hunt lofted a shot from almost 40 yards out that went into the upper portion of the net. The goal was the first of the season and collegiate career for Hunt and gave Covenant some life.
Piedmont would respond and put the match away in the 75th minute as Rogers put the Lions ahead 3-1.
The young Covenant squad played well but could not find enough scoring chances as they were outshot 14-4. Hannah Bales made 10 saves. Ruth Terry led Covenant with two shots taken.
