Men's Basketball Suffers Defeat at Oglethorpe

ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Covenant men's basketball team saw its two-game winning streak come to an end on Tuesday night as they fell on the road to Oglethorpe 86-55 inside Dorough Field House.

The loss for the Scots drops their record to 3-2 on the year and is also the first defeat to a Southern Athletic Association member this season. Oglethorpe remains perfect at 5-0 on the year.

The margin of the defeat was the largest since 2010 for Covenant, among contests counting towards the overall record. Last time the Scots were defeated by at least 30 points was on Nov. 19, 2010 at Wheaton 77-40.

Bryant Engbers came off the bench to score 17 points, on 5-of-5 shooting, while grabbing three rebounds and dishing out two assists before fouling out to lead Covenant. Chris Boyd and Colton McGriff each had seven points. Boyd and Micah Turner had six rebounds apiece.

The Scots suffered from a cold shooting night. They connected on just 36 percent in the first half and saw that percentage go down in the second half. For the game, Covenant shot 27 percent (17-of-63) and 3-of-16 from 3-point territory. Additionally, Covenant was outrebounded 50-34.

Oglethorpe took an early 3-0 lead on a 3-pointer from Victor Rohlfs in the first minute of play. The Petrels would extend their lead throughout the rest of the period as they took a 45-28 lead going into halftime.

Covenant would not threaten in the second half as Oglethorpe continued to have its way.

Jordan Kinney led Oglethorpe with 16 points. Tyler Courson tallied 15 points, while Connor Smith and Rohlfs had 14 and 12 points, respectively. Rohlfs just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. As a team, Oglethorpe connected on 46.9 percent (30-of-64) and drained 11 3-pointers.

Covenant will break for Thanksgiving before heading back to Atlanta on Tuesday, December 3 against perennial power Emory. Tip-off at the Woodruff P.E. Center is set for 7 p.m.
