Scots Bested by Emory & Henry 99-82 in Berry College Classic

ROME, Ga. -- The Covenant men's basketball team concluded its trip to the Berry College Classic with a 99-82 loss at the hands of Emory & Henry on Saturday afternoon in Rome.

Five players scored in double figures for the Scots (1-1) led by Bryant Engbers' 16 points, but Covenant turned the ball over 26 times and went cold from 3-point distance in the loss. Z Arima tallied 13 points, including a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line. Colton McGriff added 12 points and seven rebounds while Micah Turner and Nate Frierson each had 10 points.

Emory & Henry (2-0) shot 62.3 percent (38-of-61) from the floor in the victory and was paced by Stephen Brown's 23 points and nine rebounds. Malcolm Green recorded 18 points while Charles Smith had 17.

Covenant trailed for most of the first half as Emory & Henry built a double digit lead. But the Scots managed to stay in the game and trailed 53-45 at the break.

In the second half, Covenant scored the first nine points in a span of just over two minutes to take a 54-53 edge. The rally was capped by a Frierson driving layup with 17:51 remaining in the contest. The Wasps would respond with a run of their own as they outscored Covenant 13-1 over the next three minutes to regain the double figure advantage at 66-55.

Covenant would not be able to trim its deficit any further the rest of the half as Emory & Henry stretched its lead out to as many as 24 points in the period.

The Scots were efficient at the foul line connecting on 26-of-31 attempts on the night. Covenant also forced the Wasps into 22 turnovers.

Covenant will open the home portion of its schedule on Wednesday night against Sewanee. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. inside Barnes Physical Education Center. The game is part of a doubleheader with the women's game starting at 6 p.m.
