Davidson's Goals Lift Scots Past Emory & Henry

EMORY, Va. -- Two goals from junior transfer Snoopy Davidson was enough to lift the Covenant men's soccer team to a 2-0 road victory at Emory & Henry on Monday evening at Fred Selfe Stadium.

The non-conference victory for Covenant moves the Scots to 7-4-2 on the season, while Emory & Henry drops to 1-11 overall.

Davidson, who transferred from the University of South Carolina, had yet to score for Covenant this season after netting four goals in his two-year career as a Gamecock. On Monday, though, he remedied that as he posted a goal in both the first and second periods. It is the second time in his collegiate career that he has scored twice in a match.

In the 22nd minute, Davidson was the recipient of a pass from Garrison Dale inside the 18-yard box before he was able to get a foot on it to send into the net. In the 64th minute, Davidson again found the back of the net off a corner kick, this time from Matt Hudnut, to put the Scots ahead 2-0. The assist was Hudnut's first of the season.

Covenant had a slight 18-16 edge in shots attempted and 9-7 in shots on goal. Davidson accounted for 13 of those shots, while Dale, Danny Knight and Hudnut combined for the other five. The Scots also claimed a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks with two of them ending in scores.

Shuler Polk recorded his third shutout of the season as he made saves on all seven of Emory & Henry's shots on goal. Polk's counterpart from the Wasps, Didier Grillett, tallied five saves in the loss.

Covenant will return home on Friday and Saturday with a pair of USA South matches for Homecoming weekend. On Friday, the Scots host Methodist at 7 p.m., then Saturday North Carolina Wesleyan comes to Scotland Yard at 7 p.m. Both days are part of doubleheaders with the women's team playing at 5 p.m. A fireworks show will take place after Saturday's match.
