Women's Soccer Ties Piedmont 1-1 on Senior Night

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant women's soccer team wrapped up the 2013 regular season on Wednesday night by hosting USA South foe Piedmont. After recognizing three players on Senior Night at Scotland Yard, the Lady Scots tied the visiting Lions 1-1.

Before the match, Covenant honored seniors Mary Buys and Beth Wilkening along with transferring junior Ally Jennings. Each of the three players has had significant contributions to the women's soccer program both on and off the field during their careers.

After a scoreless first half, Covenant (9-8-2, 7-3-2 USA South) took a 1-0 lead on a Bethany Logan goal in the 55th minute. Rachel Buys played a quick pass to Logan just beyond the 18-yard box and Logan ripped her shot into the upper left corner of the net giving the Lady Scots the lead. The goal for Logan was her team-leading 10th of the year.

Covenant held on to that advantage until late in the second period. Piedmont's Laura Goodwin had the equalizer in the 80th minute as she dribbled through a couple Covenant defenders before taking a shot. The shot initially hit the crossbar and then bounced off the ground and spun into the back of the net for Goodwin's 14th goal of the season.

Both teams had a couple of opportunities in the overtime periods, but neither could capitalize. Piedmont held a slight 19-16 edge in shots and 10-9 in shots on goal. Hannah Bales and Lucy Johnson split time at the net with Johnson making eight saves while Bales made one. Michaela Gardner made six saves for the Lions (14-2-2, 9-1-2 USA South).

Rachel Bernard led Covenant with four shots attempted while Jennings, Ruth Terry, Logan and Jessica Rowe each had two.

Covenant receives the No. 6-seed heading into the USA South tournament which begins this Saturday. The Lady Scots will travel to Danville, Va., to take on Averett in the first round. Game time will be announced later. The final two rounds of the USA South tournament will take place in Martinsville, Va., on November 8-9.
