LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant volleyball team hosted a USA South quad-match on Saturday inside Barnes PE Center. The Lady Scots took care of business in the day's opening match against North Carolina Wesleyan as they cruised to a 3-0 (25-4, 25-14, 25-21) win.
In the second match of the day, Covenant faced stiff competition in William Peace, but the Lady Scots were victorious as they earned a five set win (25-20, 17-25, 25-17, 14-25, 15-8).
With the wins, Covenant moves to 14-9 overall and 7-4 in the USA South.
In the first match, the Lady Scots started strong and never looked back against the visiting Battling Bishops. Covenant used seven kills and a .353 hitting percentage while taking advantage of 10 NC Wesleyan errors in the first set for a 25-4 victory. Covenant would not be threatened the rest of the match, though NC Wesleyan kept it close in the third set.
Covenant was led by Chelsea VanDyk's 11 kills and two block assists. Stephanie Kirkpatrick had 20 assists, six digs and two service aces. Cora Schroeder tallied seven kills, 12 digs and two service aces. Estes Carlson added nine digs.
As a team, Covenant registered 34 kills and attacked at a .237 clip. They also out-dug the visitors 53-41.
The match against William Peace proved to be a tough one as the teams split the first four sets before Covenant controlled the fifth set to gain the match victory.
VanDyk tallied 18 kills and a hitting percentage of .455 to go along with three solo blocks and two block assists to lead the Lady Scots. Kirkpatrick had 36 assists and eight digs while Carlson led the defense with 16 digs.
Schroeder added eight kills and 10 digs and Jaclyn Stuart chipped in with 13 digs.
Covenant seized control early on in the first set as they accumulated 10 kills to win 25-20. William Peace rallied to take the second game but Covenant took a 2-1 match lead with a 25-17 win in game three.
William Peace took an early lead in the fourth set and would not let Covenant rally as they claimed an easy 25-14 set win. But the Lady Scots responded in the deciding set by jumping out to a 7-1 lead.
Covenant will travel to Demorest, Ga., on Tuesday to take on Piedmont at 6:30 p.m.
