DECATUR, Ga. -- Great South Athletic Conference leader Agnes Scott showed why its undefeated in conference play on Thursday night as the host Scotties knocked off the Covenant women's basketball team 62-37.
Covenant drops to 7-7 overall and 1-3 in GSAC play. Meanwhile, Agnes Scott remains perfect at 4-0 in league play and 9-7 on the season.
The Lady Scots struggled holding on to the ball as Covenant committed 24 turnovers on the evening and Agnes Scott turned those giveaways into 27 points. Covenant limited Agnes Scott to just 32.3 percent shooting, but was outrebounded 42-25. The Lady Scots were 15-of-37 (40.5 percent) from the field.
Covenant began the game well as they gained an 8-3 lead after four consecutive layups from Jessica Chittenden, Jessie Blankenship, Morgan Woodward, and Ruth Gibson. Agnes Scott then pulled off a 14-0 scoring run to take a 17-10 lead, one they would not relinquish. The Scotties would go into halftime up 29-19.
Agnes Scott continued to pull away in the second half as they led by as many as 25 points in the period.
Haley Soles and Blankenship each had eight points for Covenant. Chittenden added seven points and three assists, while Gibson had a team-high six rebounds.
Agnes Scott was led by Tiffany Jones' 18 points. Arielle Register tallied 16 points, eight assists, seven rebounds, and four steals for the Scotties. Genefine Sapateh had 12 points and nine rebounds, while Morgan Cooper grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
Covenant will not have to wait long to get back on the hardwood as the Lady Scots take on Valor Christian on Friday night at 6 p.m. The contest will take place at Hiwassee College in Madisonville, Tenn.
