LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- A tough first half led to a large halftime deficit for the Covenant women's basketball team as they fell to GSAC rival Huntingdon 75-58 on Saturday afternoon inside Barnes Physical Education Center.
Ruth Gibson led the Lady Scots (6-6, 1-2 GSAC) with 15 points, including a perfect 8-of-8 from the free-throw line. Jessie Blankenship added 14 points and seven rebounds. The Lady Scots struggled shooting all day as they connected on just 27.9 percent (17-61) from the floor. The women did make 21-of-25 free-throws.
Covenant was playing without starting point guard Kiaira Cooper who was injured earlier this week in practice.
Huntingdon (9-8, 3-1 GSAC) placed four players in double digits with Patricia Pickens leading the way with 20 points. Devin Douglas had 13 points and 13 rebounds, while Katie Martin and Morgan Crawford each chipped in 11 points for the Lady Hawks.
Covenant took an early 6-2 lead in the first half, but that edge did not last long. Huntingdon rattled off a 14-2 scoring run to go ahead 16-8 at the 11:38 mark of the first half. The Lady Hawks made over 50 percent of their shots in the opening period to take a 41-19 lead into halftime.
The 22-point lead for Huntingdon only increased in the second half as the Lady Hawks led by as many as 33 in the period.
Morgan Woodward led Covenant with four assists and four steals to go along with eight points. Haley Soles added five points and three assists.
Covenant returns to action on Tuesday at Sewanee in a non-conference game. Tip-off against the Tigers is at 7 p.m. EST. Covenant defeated Sewanee 63-47 earlier this season.
