Volleyball Earns Two More Wins in Winston-Salem

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Covenant Lady Scots volleyball team finally lost a set in conference play, but that did not stop them from earning two more victories on Saturday. Covenant defeated GSAC foe Salem College 3-1 (25-13, 22-25, 25-16, 25-17) and then bested William Peace University in five sets (25-18, 25-22, 22-25, 13-25, 15-12).

With the wins, Covenant moves to 14-3 on the year and remain perfect in Great South Athletic Conference play at 6-0.

In the first match, Chelsea Van Dyk again led the offensive attack for the Lady Scots with 15 kills while Cora Schroeder added 10. Stephanie Kirkpatrick tallied 40 assists to go along with 12 digs and five service aces.

Covenant dropped its first conference set in 17 total sets in the contest. The Lady Scots took games one and two relatively easily before falling in the third set. Covenant bounced back to win set four and take the match.

William Peace took Covenant to the brink of defeat in the second match of the day. Covenant again took the first two sets to take a commanding 2-0 match lead, but William Peace rallied in sets three and four to force a deciding fifth set.

In that fifth set, William Peace looked poised to win the match having taken a 12-8 lead. But three straight attack errors from William Peace mixed with three straight kills from Van Dyk gave Covenant the comeback win and pushed the Lady Scots' winning streak to seven.

Van Dyk led Covenant with 13 kills in the second match, while Jessica Chittenden added 11. Estes Carlson had an outstanding game defensively as she recorded a season-high 32 digs. Kirkpatrick had 39 assists with four service aces and 11 digs. Pretoria den Boer accumulated six kills and 16 digs.

The Lady Scots are back in action on Wednesday, October 3 against Oglethorpe University at 7 p.m.
