Volleyball Splits Matches at Piedmont

DEMOREST, Ga. -- The Covenant volleyball team split its two matches at Piedmont College on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Scots defeated LaGrange College 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-18) before seeing their five-game winning streak come to an end with a tough 3-2 loss to Piedmont (23-25, 25-17, 25-23, 22-25, 15-11).

In the first match, Covenant (7-3) got 11 kills from reigning GSAC player of the week Chelsea Van Dyk along with 11 digs from Paige Cheney. Stephanie Kirkpatrick tallied 25 assists, while Cora Schroeder added 10 digs and six kills. The Lady Scots recovered from an early deficit in the first set to take the win and then cruised to the final two set wins.

Covenant faced a stiff challenge in the second match when they took on host Piedmont. Van Dyk accumulated 24 kills, while Jessica Chittenden had 18 of her own in the loss.

The Lady Scots again came from behind in the first set to pull out the 25-23 win. Piedmont rallied back to take sets two and three before Covenant answered with a win in the fourth game.  In that fourth set, Covenant trailed 17-12 before getting back-to-back kills from Chittenden to tie the score. The Lady Scots would go on and win the fourth set to force a final set.

In the fifth set, Piedmont took an early lead, but a kill from Pretoria den Boer made it 8-7 in favor of the home team. Piedmont would score the next five points and claim the match win.

Kirkpatrick recorded 52 assists in the loss. Four Lady Scots had double-digits in digs with Schroeder leading the way with 15 followed by Estes Carlson (13), Kirkpatrick (13), and Hannah Rogers (10).

Covenant returns to action on Wednesday, September 19 against Spelman College on Lookout Mountain. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
