LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Mo Cross' first goal of the season came at the right time for the Covenant women's soccer team. Cross scored in the 84th minute of play to give the Lady Scots a 2-1 win over Huntingdon College on Saturday evening at Scotland Yard.
Cross received a perfect pass from Ally Jennings that was chipped over the defense towards the box. Cross then booted the ball past Huntingdon keeper Jenny Burnash for the score.
Covenant outshot the visiting Lady Hawks 27-3, but still had difficulty getting the ball into the net. Burnash ended with six saves on the day. The Lady Scots also took 12 corner kicks, opposed to zero for Huntingdon.
Huntingdon (0-4, 0-1 GSAC) took an early lead with a score from Kate Garrigan in the 10th minute. Garrigan played a deflected ball and laced her shot just over the outstretched arms of Covenant keeper Hannah Bales for the score to give the Lady Hawks a 1-0 lead.
The Lady Scots responded just before halftime when Beth Wilkening found the back of the net. The ball was played into the box where Annie Sostok deflected the ball with her body towards Wilkening who finished just a few yards from the net tying the score at one.
Covenant (4-1-1, 2-0 GSAC) held the ball on its end of the field for most of the second half, having a 13-0 edge in shots. Mary Claire Roberson had two shots on goal, while four other Lady Scots each had one. Bales finished with one save.
The Lady Scots return to the field on Friday, September 21 when they host Greenville College at Scotland Yard. Kickoff is slated for 5:00 p.m.
