No. 2 Emory Cruises Past Lady Scots

ATLANTA -- The Covenant Lady Scots softball team wrapped up its regular season schedule with a doubleheader at No. 2-ranked Emory University on Wednesday afternoon. The host Eagles took game one 11-2 before completing the sweep with an 8-0 win in game two.

Emory improves to 33-3 overall on the season, while Covenant sees its record fall to 20-18 for the year.

Game One

The Eagles scored six runs in the bottom of the third inning to break away from Covenant as they cruised to an 11-2 win in game one.

Emory's Meaghan Schultz homered in the second inning, a two-run shot, to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead. Covenant came back with a run in the top of the third with back-to-back hits from Meagan Hess and Christine Core. Hess singled with two outs and then was brought home on Core's double to right-center field to make it 2-1.

But in the bottom half of the third, Emory scored six times on six hits, while taking advantage of three Covenant errors, to go ahead 8-1. The Lady Scots got back a run in the fourth inning as Beth Harris led off the inning with a single and later scored on a Cori Hilt RBI single. The Eagles added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth for the final tally.

Emory starter Bridgett Holloway (17-1) picks up the win after going all five innings and surrendering two earned runs on six hits. Hilt (3-6) is credited with the loss as she went 2.1 innings allowing eight runs, though only six were earned.

Core, Harris, Hilt, Hess, Jenni Jobe, and Lauren Johns each recorded a hit for Covenant. Emory's Schultz, Moira Sullivan, and Jessica Boni had two RBIs apiece.

Game Two

Emory jumped out quickly with four runs in the top of the first inning and Covenant could not recover as the Eagles won 8-0 to finish off the sweep.

The first three batters reached base for Emory in the bottom of the first and that set up Megan Light's bases clearing double to make it 3-0. Light then scored on a Sullivan single that gave the hosts a 4-0 advantage.

Covenant could muster just three hits off of Emory starter Lena Brottman. The Lady Scots had a runner reach scoring position just once in the game.

Brottman (9-0) receives the win for Emory after throwing four scoreless innings and allowing three hits. Covenant starter Grace Hooper (3-1) is hit with the loss as she lasted less than an inning against one of the best teams in the country.

Covenant will return to action on Monday, April 30 when they host the 2012 NCCAA Mid-East Region Softball Tournament. The three team tournament will be played in its entirety on Monday with games beginning at 9 a.m.
