Lady Scots Fall on Senior Day, 5-3

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Playing in a rescheduled game from March 8, the Covenant softball team honored its three seniors on Saturday afternoon after falling 5-3 to GSAC rival Huntingdon College. The Lady Scots are now 20-16 overall and finish 8-8 in conference play. Huntingdon wins the GSAC regular season title as they finished 15-1 in conference and are now 25-11 overall.

Seniors Chelsea Krafft, Beth Harris, and Christine Core were honored after the game. The three seniors have played a huge role in the softball program's growth in their four years of service. Krafft and Harris have put up numbers that are among the best in the region and nationally the past two years, while Core has been key in getting on base in the leadoff spot and covering center field.

In this game, Covenant started strong with two runs in the bottom of the first. Core and Harris singled to set up Lauren Johns' double down the left field line that plated both Core and Harris to give the Lady Scots a 2-0 lead. Covenant made it 3-0 after two innings when Harris reached on an infield single with two outs that allowed Cori Hilt to score from third.

Huntingdon began to get into the game when they scored in the top of the third to bring the score up to 3-1, Covenant. The Lady Hawks then scored three times in the fourth inning to take a 4-3 lead. Kristi Taylor had the big hit in the inning as her one-out single scored two runs and gave Huntingdon the lead for good. Huntingdon would add a single run in the sixth inning on a Morgan Goshorn sacrifice fly to make it 5-3.

Huntingdon starter Bree Giordana stifled the Covenant offense over the final five innings as she allowed just two hits. Giordana (14-6) picked up the win after throwing a complete-game allowing two earned runs and striking out three.

Krafft (14-10) was hit with the loss despite her seven innings and six strikeouts on 104 pitches.

Harris led the Covenant offense going 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Core and Johns each went 2-for-4, with Core scoring a run and Johns adding two RBIs.

Covenant's final doubleheader of the season is against Emory University on Wednesday, April 25 in Atlanta. Game one is set to start at 2:30 p.m.
