Covenant Tennis Rolls Past Maryville

CHATTANOOGA -- Both the Covenant men's and women's tennis teams completed season sweeps of Great South Athletic Conference foe Maryville College on Wednesday afternoon. The men won their match 8-1, while the women won by a 6-3 score.

The Covenant men improve to 3-3 overall and 3-1 in GSAC matches. The Lady Scots move to 3-2 overall and keep their perfect conference mark at 3-0.

On the men's side, Covenant won all three doubles matches. John Hirte and Jonathan Herberich defeated Maryville's Zach Clark and Jimmy Fulton 8-3. The duos of Andy Jones and Calvin Chase, along with Clark Sealy and Jake Sikkema both recorded victories.

In singles matches, Herberich had to rally back after losing the first set to beat Fulton 1-6, 6-1, 10-4. Hirte beat Clark 6-0, 6-3, Jones defeated Tyler Odle 6-1, 6-2. Chase ousted Jordan Keller 6-0, 6-1, while Sealy beat Tony Gill 6-1, 6-0. Maryville's lone win came as Austin Canfield defeated Sikkema 7-6, 6-0.

The Lady Scots won two of the three doubles matches as Madi Hyatt teamed with Sarah Carter to win 8-6. Anne Marie Rowe and Gretchen Rowe combined to defeat Maryville's Mary Mac Alexander and Christine Flood 8-1.

Covenant dominated the singles action as the Lady Scots won all but two of the six matches. Hyatt had to go three sets to beat Maggie Dew 6-4, 3-6, 10-6. Anne Marie Rowe recorded a straight set shutout of Flood 6-0, 6-0, while her sister Gretchen knocked off Rachel Hutson 6-2, 7-5. Kelsey Whitted gave Covenant its fourth singles victory with a 6-4, 6-3 defeat of Alexander.

Covenant returns to action with two matches each at GSAC schools over the weekend. On Friday, Covenant plays at LaGrange College with matches starting at 4 p.m. Then on Saturday, the teams are at Huntingdon College where play begins at 10 a.m.
