MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- After getting rained out on Friday at LaGrange, the Covenant tennis squads headed to Alabama to take on GSAC rival Huntingdon College. The Scots won two doubles matches, but ultimately fell 6-3, while the Lady Scots were defeated 7-2.
On the men's side, John Hirte led Covenant with a singles victory and a doubles win. Hirte gave Covenant (3-4, 3-2 GSAC) its only singles win when he defeated Huntingdon's Zac Baldwin 6-3, 6-1. Hirte then teamed with Jonathan Herberich to defeat Baldwin and Sean Jackson 8-6. The duo of Calvin Chase and Clark Sealy got the Scots' only other victory on the day with an 8-3 win over Larry Pritchett and Stacy Terry.
The Lady Scots (3-3, 3-1) had a tough go of it against Huntingdon (11-3, 4-1), one of the top teams in the GSAC. Madi Hyatt and Lauren Redberg defeated Katie Scott and Micaela White 8-5 in doubles play, while Stephanie Sizemore and Kelsey Whitted knocked off the Lady Hawks' Arielle Barraca and Ally Tuttle 8-3 for Covenant's second and final win. In singles action, Whitted took Christian Vick into three sets before losing 5-7, 6-2, 10-2. Redberg's singles match also went three sets before she was ousted by Hannah Still 3-6, 6-3, 10-6.
The Covenant men return to action on Tuesday with a home match against Sewanee starting at 3 p.m. Both tennis teams will play matches against Piedmont College on Wednesday in Chattanooga beginning at 3:30 p.m.
