Win-Streak Snapped; Lady Scots Split With Berry

ROME, Ga. -- Riding a season-high eight-game winning streak, the Covenant softball team was tripped up on the road Tuesday afternoon by Berry College 6-5 in game one of a doubleheader. The Lady Scots bounced back to take game two 10-7 and settle for the doubleheader split.

Covenant goes to 14-7 on the season with the day's results. Berry is now 16-6 for the year.

Beth Harris led the Lady Scots offensively on the day as she went 5-for-7 with two home runs, seven runs batted in, and five runs scored. Harris leads Covenant in hitting for the season with a .523 batting average, nine homers, and 37 RBIs.

Chelsea Krafft picked up her ninth win of the season in the second game. Krafft (9-4) surrendered 13 hits, but limited Berry to just six earned runs in her complete-game effort.

Game One

Berry took a 4-0 lead after two innings in the first game. Kristen Stoll and Lacey Herring had run-scoring hits in the three-run first inning for Berry, while Holly Todd singled home the lone run in the second inning.

Covenant struck for two runs in the third inning, thanks to Harris' one-out, two-run home run that brought home Christine Core to make it 4-2.

Jessica Washington added to Berry's lead in the fourth inning with a double to right-center field that scored Critter Dawsey. Stoll then added her second RBI of the game two batters later when she singled home Washington to make it 6-2.

Harris helped get the Lady Scots back into the game in the sixth with a leadoff triple. Courtney Wagoner followed with a double of her own to score Harris. With two outs and nobody on, Morgan Booker tripled to right field and scored on a Tatum Daniel RBI single that made it 6-4.

After the first two batters were retired to start the top of the seventh inning, Jenni Jobe and Krafft hit back-to-back singles putting runners at first and second. Wagoner was intentionally walked and Lauren Johns then delivered an RBI single to score Jobe and make it 6-5. But Berry's Andrea Cole worked out of the jam to preserve the win for Berry.

Caillee Shamoun (11-2) picks up the pitching win for Berry after going 5.2 innings and allowing four runs. Cole receives her second save of the year as she went the final 1.1 innings. Harris (3-1) gets the loss for Covenant.

Game Two

In the second game, the Lady Scots scored two runs in the first and four more in the second to take a commanding 6-1 lead. Harris and Booker each had RBI singles in the first inning. In the second, Core and Harris each recorded run-scoring singles, while Johns had the biggest hit of the inning, a two-run single to center field that scored Harris and Jobe.

Harris' ninth homer of the season came in the top of the fifth inning and capped another four-run inning for the Lady Scots. Harris' three-run blast came with two outs and scored Chandler Shepherd and Jobe to give Covenant a 10-3 lead.

Berry fought back with two runs each in the fifth and sixth innings, but Krafft was able to work out of major jams in both innings with limited damage.

Krafft threw a complete-game, her 14th of the season, giving up 13 hits and seven runs, though only six were earned, while striking out five. Cole (5-4) is hit with the loss for Berry.

Several Lady Scots had superb games at the plate in game two. Harris was 3-for-4 with five RBIs and three runs scored. Core went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI, Jobe went 2-for-3 with two runs. Johns picked up two RBIs and went 1-for-3, and Shepherd was 1-for-3 with two runs scored.

Covenant will turn around quickly to play a doubleheader on Wednesday against Judson College in Chattanooga. First pitch at Warner Park is set for 5 p.m.
