CHATTANOOGA -- Both men's and women's tennis teams were in action on Tuesday with matches against Berry College in Chattanooga. The Covenant men fell to Berry 6-3 and the Berry women also beat the Covenant women by a 6-3 score.
The Covenant men fall to 2-3 for the season, while the women are now 4-4 on the year.
In the men's competition, Berry took all three doubles matches. Covenant's Calvin Chase and Tom Yates fell to Berry's Steven Weeks and Ben Ortman 8-5, while John Hirte and Andy Jones were defeated by Berry's duo of Johnathan Surls and Logan Yerbey 8-3.
Hirte pulled out a singles victory over Yerbey in three sets 6-2, 1-6, 6-2. Jones defeated Berry's Jake Pullen 6-2, 6-4. Chase got Covenant's only other singles victory when he rallied to beat Ortman 1-6, 6-4, 10-3.
On the women's side, the Lady Scots took two-out-of-three in doubles action. Stephanie Sizemore teamed with Kelsey Whitted to defeat Berry's Caitlin Smith and Maggie McDonald 8-4. The Rowe sister combination of Anne Marie and Gretchen knocked off Keri McGinnis and Ali Jackson 8-2.
Even with those two doubles victories, Berry outlasted Covenant in the singles matches as they won all but one. Whitted recorded the Lady Scots' lone victory by taking out Jackson 6-0, 6-1. Anne Marie Rowe lost a close match to McGinnis 7-5, 6-2 while Sizemore was defeated by McDonald 6-4, 6-4.
The Covenant men will return to action on Thursday with a match at Piedmont College in Demorest, Ga. Matches start at 3:30 p.m. The women's team will compete next at home against Maryville College on March 28.
