CHATTANOOGA -- Coming off a tough defeat at the hands of Carson-Newman College on Thursday, the Covenant men's tennis team rebounded on Friday as they beat Great South Athletic Conference foe LaGrange College 8-1 at Baylor School.
With the victory, Covenant moves to 2-1 for the season and a perfect 2-0 in GSAC play. LaGrange remains winless at 0-4 and 0-3 in conference matches.
John Hirte recorded a straight set shut out 6-0, 6-0 of LaGrange's Blake Craft and teamed up with Jonathan Herberich to defeat Craft and Nate Moore 8-4 in doubles. Tom Yates got his second singles victory of the season with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Alex Glass, while Andy Jones recorded a 6-1, 6-3 decision over Moore. Calvin Chase and Clark Sealy both eased to victories. Kevin Folsom gave LaGrange its only win of the day as he beat Covenant's Jake Sikkema 6-2, 6-3.
Jones and Yates paired up to defeat Glass and Stephen Wendel 8-4 in doubles action, while Sealy and Chase cruised to an 8-0 decision over Folsom and Jeronimo Sanchez.
Covenant will hit the courts again on Saturday with a match against GSAC member Huntingdon College. Play begins at 2 p.m. at The McCallie School in Chattanooga.
