CHATTANOOGA -- For the first time this season, the Covenant men's tennis squad was defeated in Great South Athletic Conference play as Huntingdon came away with a 6-3 win over the Scots on Saturday afternoon at The McCallie School in Chattanooga.
Covenant falls to 2-2 on the season and 2-1 in conference matches. Huntingdon, meanwhile, improves to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the GSAC.
Huntingdon swept all three doubles matches. John Hirte and Jonathan Herberich were ousted by the Hawks duo of Zac Baldwin and Sean Jackson in a close match, 8-6. Huntingdon's Tyler Creamer and Lee Howell also scored an 8-6 win over the Scots' Andy Jones and Tom Yates, while Larry Pritchett and Stacy Terry knocked off Clark Sealy and Calvin Chase 8-4.
In singles play, Covenant got victories from Hirte, Jones, and Sealy. Hirte defeated Baldwin, who retired in the second set. Jones beat Howell in three sets 6-2, 4-6, 10-7. Sealy dropped the first set to Terry, but came back and won the last two sets to get the win 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. Creamer, Jackson, and Pritchett each won their matches to help Huntingdon gain the overall win.
Covenant will host Berry College on Tuesday, March 20 with matches beginning at 4 p.m. The Lady Scots will also be in action against Berry and both team matches will be played at The McCallie School.
