KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Covenant Scots and Lady Scots tennis teams began their seasons Saturday afternoon. Beginning their season off strong, the men's team faced off against Maryville College and won 9-0. The women's team also started the season with a win against Maryville College 9-0. Both Covenant teams are now 1-0 for the season, while Maryville is 0-1.
The highlights for the men's team singles included John Hirte defeating Maryville's Zach Clark 7-5, 6-2 and Jonathan Herberich beating Jimmy Fulton 6-2, 6-3. Tom Yates and Sean Guery each recorded straight set shutouts 6-0, 6-0 while Andy Jones won his match 6-2, 6-0. In the men's doubles, Hirte/Yates won their match 8-1 and Jones/Herberich also took home an 8-1 win. The men also received two wins by default.
For the women's singles Madi Hyatt got a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Maryville's Maggie Dew and Sarah Carter took her match with scores of 6-3, 7-5. Both Rowe sisters, Anne Marie and Gretchen, scored relatively easy wins with Gretchen defeating Rachel Hutson 6-2, 6-1 and Anne Marie beating Christine Flood 6-1, 6-1. Lauren Redberg and Stephanie Sizemore each cruised to victories. Women's doubles saw Hyatt/Redberg win 8-2, Kelsey Whitted/Sizemore took their match 8-5, and Gretchen Rowe/Anne Marie Rowe rounded out the sweep of Maryville with an 8-1 win.
The women's team will return to competition on Wednesday with a match at Spelman College beginning at 3:30 p.m. in Atlanta. The men will not have a match until after spring break.
