Softball Swept on Road by Cumberland

LEBANON, Tenn. -- Despite three home runs from Beth Harris, the Covenant softball team was swept by Cumberland University in a doubleheader on Saturday. The Lady Bulldogs took game one 6-5 with two runs in the bottom of the seventh and then won game two 6-2.

The losses for the Lady Scots drops them to 1-3 on the season. Cumberland, meanwhile, improves to 7-3 overall for the year.

Game One - Box Score

Cumberland jumped on Covenant in the first inning of game one by scoring three runs. Sarah Murray's two-run single to right field capped the inning and put the Lady Bulldogs up 3-0.

Covenant responded in its half of the fourth inning. Harris started the action with a home run over the center field fence. Then Meagan Hess batted in Cori Hilt and Morgan Booker with a single to left field to tie the game at 3-3.

Cumberland retaliated with a run of its own in the fourth inning, but Harris had the answer as she led off the fifth inning with her second homer of the game. Harris then broke the 4-4 tie in the sixth inning with a two-out double to right field that plated Hess.

But Cumberland left the final mark on the game as the Lady Bulldogs put together four straight singles to start the seventh inning that produced two runs. Sydney Broderick brought home the game-winning run with a single to right field.

Cumberland's Caity Gray (1-0) picks up the win after going the final three innings. The loss goes to Chelsea Krafft (1-1). Krafft pitched all six innings while striking out five and walking two. Harris ended game one 3-for-4 with two home runs and three RBIs for the Lady Scots.

Game Two - Box Score

In the second game, Covenant started off with yet another homer by Harris to center field. But Cumberland pounced early with four runs in its half of the first inning and the Lady Bulldogs cruised from there for the win.

In the top of the 3rd inning, Covenant scratched across a run after Chandler Shepherd reached on an error and then stole second base. Courtney Wagoner then drove home Shepherd with a single to cut the Lady Scots' deficit to 4-2.

Single runs in the fifth and sixth innings for Cumberland effectively put the game out of reach for the Lady Scots.

Hilt (0-2) took the loss for Covenant as she went five innings and struck out seven while walking one. Courtney Maynard (5-0) received the win for the Lady Bulldogs with her complete-game outing.

Wagoner went 2-for-3 with an RBI in game two for the Lady Scots. Harris ended the day 4-for-6 with four runs batted in, three runs scored, and a walk.

Covenant will return to action on Feb. 28 with a doubleheader at Tennessee Temple. The games will be played at Warner Park in Chattanooga with game one starting at 5 p.m.
