Volleyball Avenges Earlier Loss, Sends Seniors Out With Win

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant volleyball team sent out its two seniors, Jessica Chittenden and Paige Cheney, with a three-set sweep over Oglethorpe University 25-15, 25-21, 26-24 on Tuesday night in Barnes Physical Education Center.

Before the match, both Chittenden and Cheney were honored for their efforts and dedication to the volleyball program both on and off the court during their careers. The Lady Scots then honored their seniors even more by avenging a five-set loss to Oglethorpe earlier this season.

Chelsea Van Dyk led the offensive attack for Covenant (22-6) with nine kills and two block assists. Estes Carlson tallied 16 digs, while Pretoria den Boer added 14. Stephanie Kirkpatrick recorded 26 assists.

Chittenden was all over the court as she racked up six kills, two solo blocks, and five block assists. Cheney chipped in with a pair of service aces and four digs.

Oglethorpe (9-15) took a 10-6 lead in the first set thanks to a kill from Erin Shelton. Covenant would rally big as the Lady Scots outscored their opponent 19-5 the rest of the way. The Lady Scots recorded seven kills during that stretch with three of them coming from Chittenden.

The second set was even tighter than the first. Both teams went back-and-forth with neither gaining much of an edge. With the score knotted at 21 apiece, Covenant scored the final four points with kills from Hannah Rogers, den Boer, and Chittenden to take a commanding two-set lead.

Covenant wrapped up the third set in fine fashion as the Lady Scots rallied from a late 20-18 deficit to take a brief 24-23 lead before Oglethorpe tied it again at 24. An attack error from Oglethorpe and another kill from Rogers gave the Lady Scots the set and the match.

Oglethorpe was led by McKenna Bondarenko's 15 kills, to go along with eight digs. Anne Marie Disalvo had a team-high 25 assists, while Megan MaKuck had 22 digs.

Covenant is back in action on Saturday when they host Rust College at 11:00 a.m. on Lookout Mountain. Covenant was supposed to play a doubleheader on Saturday, but the 9:00 a.m. match against Coastal College of Georgia has been cancelled.
