Sweeping Success: Volleyball Cruises in Tri-Match

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- After a week off from competition, the Covenant volleyball team cruised to two sweeps of GSAC foe Huntingdon and NAIA-member Reinhardt on Saturday. The Lady Scots beat Huntingdon 25-9, 25-14, 25-15 and then defeated Reinhardt 25-16, 25-21, 26-24.

Middle hitter Chelsea Van Dyk tallied 23 kills for the day, while Pretoria den Boer added 10 kills in the Reinhardt match. Stephanie Kirkpatrick recorded 62 assists for the day and 11 digs in the Huntingdon match to lead Covenant as they improved to 18-6 on the year and remain perfect in conference play at 8-0.

Estes Carlson paced the Lady Scots with 13 digs in the Reinhardt contest.

In the first match of the day, Covenant came out quickly to grab an 11-3 lead off a Van Dyk service ace. Covenant increased its lead to 15-4 as they set the tone for the rest of the match. Leading 15-11 in the second set, Covenant pulled away from the Lady Hawks by scoring 10 of the final 13 points of the set. During that run, Covenant produced five kills.

Covenant would then take the match in the third set by again taking an 11-3 lead, thanks to a Cora Schroeder kill. Huntingdon would only get as close as seven the rest of the way.

Schroeder had nine kills and seven digs in the first match.

The second match pitted Reinhardt against Covenant. The first set went went back-and-forth until Covenant broke open a 9-9 game by scoring 11 of the next 15 points, capped by a Van Dyk kill, to make it 20-13. The Lady Scots would finish off the Lady Eagles with a kill from Hannah Rogers.

Reinhardt pulled ahead 8-2 to begin the second set before Covenant got back into it with a 9-2 scoring spurt. This set also went back-and-forth until Covenant put the game away with a 6-3 scoring run finished with a den Boer kill to win the set.

Set three was even tighter as Reinhardt scored two straight to tie the score at 24 apiece. Back-to-back kills from Van Dyk and Jessica Chittenden gave Covenant a 3-0 match win.

Chittenden chipped in nine kills against Reinhardt. Rogers, Paige Cheney, and Schroeder accumulated nine, eight, and eight digs respectively.

Covenant returns to action on October 23 when they travel to take on Spelman College. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m.
