Scots Lose Second Straight 1-0 Match

WHEATON, Ill -- The Covenant Scots fell 1-0 to North Central College in their second and final match of the Bob Baptista Invitational on Saturday afternoon on the campus of Wheaton College. The loss was the second straight 1-0 defeat the Scots have suffered in as many days and drops the Scots to 0-2 on the season. With the win, North Central improves to 1-1 for the year.

Covenant had to battle not only North Central, but also the weather elements. Severe weather that battered much of the Midwest during Saturday, also caused a 55 minute delay during the second period.

North Central scored the only goal of the match late in the first period when Paul Box found the net from the left side at the 39:57 mark that put the Cardinals up 1-0. The goal was set up after a header from T.J. Simmons was saved by Scots keeper John Eger, then Alex Arias found Box who was able to get it past Eger for what ended up being the game-winner.

Covenant's best chance to score in the match came early in the second period, but Todd Fleming's shot was saved by North Central keeper Phillip Klipp in the 48th minute. The save was the only one recorded by Klipp in the match. Gordon Carpenter and David Huertas each had opportunities to score later on in the period, however both shots came up empty.

The Scots were outshot for a second straight game, this time 19-10. Eger made 6 saves in a valiant effort to keep Covenant within striking distance. Tyler Morrison led the Scots in shot attempts with 3.

Covenant will now have almost a week to recover from their long trip before heading to Nashville, TN on Friday, September 9 to take on Cumberland University in the first match of the Trevecca Nazarene Invitational. The Scots home opener is set for Saturday, September 17 at 1:00 p.m. against Guilford College.
