BRISTOL, Tenn. -- After losing in the first game of the 2011 Mid-East Region Baseball Tournament, the Covenant College Scots made a dazzling run through the draw to make it to the championship but ultimately fell one game short, losing to King College by a score of 6-2 late Friday afternoon.
Because of their lone loss and the fact that the Tornado had gone 3-0 over the last 3 days, the Scots needed successive victories over King in order to claim this year's crown. After game one, it appeared as though they were well on their way to do that, but 1-run inning followed by 1-run inning plagued the Scots in game two. The Tornado scored 2 in the second, then 1 more in each of their 4 subsequent frames. Covenant scored 2 in the bottom of the second to tie the game but was unable to punch any more across. The Tornado pitching staff allowed 7 hits and 3 walks en route to their second consecutive Mid-East crown and automatic bid to the NCCAA World Series.
The Scots will await the NCCAA's decision on at-large bids to the tournament, which will be announced over the weekend.
Covenant, facing elimination for the third time, did what no other team proved capable of doing when they defeated King 3-2 in Friday's early game.
Taylor Oldham (2-for-4) and Chris Rollins (2-for-3) led Covenant in game two. Harrison Fisher and Luke Furuto provided the RBIs, batting in Rollins and Kurtis Wiles.
King got its runs via a squeeze bunt, a sacrifice fly, base hits, and errors. Covenant committed 3 more in the contest.
An invite to the World Series means more games for the Scots next week in Mason, Ohio. Otherwise, the Scots season will have come to an end. Check their schedule page for information on future games.
