BRISTOL, Tenn. -- The Asbury Eagles scored 6 runs through the first three innings of play Tuesday morning and cruised to a victory over the 6-seeded Scots in the first round of the NCCAA Mid-East Region Tournament. 4 of those runs were unearned as Covenant committed an uncharacteristic 4 errors through the seven innings of play. Covenant, now 24-15, will play the loser of the Oakland City University/ Bluefield College match-up Wednesday morning at 10:00 a.m.
Freshman David Lockwood had the biggest day for the Scots, going 3-for-4 with a run-producing single in the sixth. Junior Taylor Oldham went 2-for-2 with a double, single, and sacrifice fly.
Wesley McDowell was dealt the loss and drops to 4-2 this season. He gave up 7 hits and 2 earned runs in 3 innings on the mound. Shane Ludwick, Eddy Jamerson, and Jacob Hutcherson pitched in relief. Ludwick threw for 2 innings and gave up a run on 3 hits while striking out 2. Jamerson and Hutcherson closed out the last 2 innings for the Scots, Jamerson pitching for the first time since early April and Hutcherson for the first time this season.
For the Eagles, Jon Wes Adams pitched his second complete game of the year. The senior gave up 9 hits and only 2 runs through his 100 pitches. Asbury will now face the King College/ Mid-Continent University loser.
The Scots are now in the losers' bracket and must win out in order to advance.
