Late Rally Gives Covenant Sweep

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Chelsea Krafft pitched a complete-game two-hitter in game one and Lindsey Potter's walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the 7th of game two gave the Lady Scots a sweep over Huntingdon College with scores of 3-0 and 6-5.  Covenant has now won 8 straight games and improves its record to 13-7.  Huntingdon falls to 17-11 on the year.

In game one, Covenant used two doubles in the 1st inning to take a 1-0 lead.  Beth Harris led off the inning with a double that hit off the top of the fence in left field.  Three batters later, Jenni Jobe hit a double down the right field line that scored Harris.  The Lady Scots added two more runs in the 2nd inning when Christine Core tripled to right field, bringing home Potter and Sonja Townsend making it 3-0.

Meanwhile, the story of game one was Covenant starter Chelsea Krafft.  Krafft tossed a complete-game shutout while punching out 12 Lady Hawks and walking just 2.  Huntingdon could manage just 2 hits off the right-hander who did not allow a hit after the 3rd inning.

Krafft had just one inning of difficulty, in the 6th.  Krafft walked the first two batters of the inning and the Lady Hawks threatened with runners on second and third base with two outs.  But Krafft had the answer as she struck out Huntingdon's Jessica Sharker to end the inning.  Krafft had no issue in the 7th and, fittingly enough, she would end the game with a strikeout.

In game two, Huntingdon finally got a run on the board off Krafft in the top of the 1st.  The Lady Scots responded in their half of the 1st by scoring three times to take a 3-1 lead.  Harris homered to lead off the inning, for her team-leading 3rd home run of the year.  Kim Cuttichia and Kristen Walker followed that up with RBI doubles of their own.

The Lady Hawks scored twice in the 2nd inning to tie the game at 3-3.  But Potter gave the lead back to Covenant in the bottom of the 3rd with a two-out single that scored Jobe from third base.  In the back and forth affair, Huntingdon catcher Brittney Novickis beat out a slow roller to third with two outs that allowed a runner on third to score and tie the game at 4 apiece.

With the game still tied at 4-4 in the top of the 7th, the Lady Hawks seized control on a Holly Ostrander RBI single that made it 5-4 Huntingdon.  Covenant would not go away, however, and in the bottom of the 7th Core led off with a triple, just beating out the relay throw to third.  Courtney Wagoner then singled to bring in Core and tie the game.  The Lady Scots would eventually load the bases with a single by Jobe and a walk by Walker with one out when Potter stepped up to the plate.

"With one out, I knew that a sac fly would almost certainly score a run," said Potter.  "My goal was to get the ball thru the infield."

Potter did just that.  With the count 2-2, she dumped a short fly ball in front of the center fielder that brought home the winning run.

Cheslea Krafft picks up both wins for the Lady Scots as she notches wins number 9 and 10 on the year. Krafft pitched a complete game in game two as well.  Lindsey Potter went 4-for-7 for the day with 2 RBIs and a run scored.  Beth Harris, Christine Core, and Jenni Jobe each collected three hits.

"Today, our team was able to play 'Covenant ball,'" continued Potter.  "We were able to push ourselves in order to prove that we are a mature team and that we deserve respect.  Our team was able to prove that a little Christian team can fight for victory and win.  Huntington has beaten both Emory and Birmingham Southern.  Having swept them today will certainly help keep the morale high and help carry us forward as we take on Maryville tomorrow."

Covenant will indeed take to the road on Saturday as they travel to Maryville College to take on the other Lady Scots in a doubleheader.  Game one is set to start at 1:00pm.  The next home doubleheader for the Lady Scots is Tuesday, April 12 against Truett-McConnell with game one starting at 4:00pm on Lookout Mountain.
