JACKSON, Miss. -- Callum Sears scored 10 points and had 3 rebounds, but it was not enough for the Covenant Scots Tuesday night in Mississippi as the Majors of Millsaps College defeated the Scots 50-41. It is Covenant's second defeat in a row in which they have allowed 55 points or fewer. The Scots were without the contributions of starters Sam Bowman, Damien Chaney, and Kacey Chambers as all three were relegated to street clothes because of injury.
The short-handed Scots battled in the first half as they erased a 15-10 deficit and went on a 13-2 run to end the first half, ending with a Rosbie Mutcherson jumper from the free-throw line with 1:22 left in the half. Covenant led 23-17 at the half despite not connecting on a three-pointer (0-9). The Scots defense was the story of the first 20 minutes as they allowed the Majors to shoot just 27.3% (6-22) with zero three-pointers made (0-7) and forcing 7 turnovers.
Covenant added to their lead in the early minutes of the second half. Jon DeVries' three-pointer at the 19:22 mark gave the Scots their largest lead of the game at 26-17. Sears would match that lead again a few moments later when he connected on a three ball, putting the Scots up 29-20.
From that point on, however, it was all Majors. Down 33-27 with 13:13 left in the game, Millsaps outscored Covenant 23-8 the rest of the way. A layup from Taylor Meades gave the Majors their largest lead of the game at 50-38 with under 2 minutes remaining.
Callum Sears was the only Covenant player in double figures on the night. Jon DeVries and Joey Danek each had 9 points and 6 rebounds. Logan Dahms had 6 points in just 13 minutes of play, and Zarome Lakey dished out 5 assists for the Scots (4-17).
Millsaps (10-12) was led by LV Sumler who, on his senior night, led all scorers with 16 points while grabbing 11 rebounds for the double-double. Taylor Meades also chipped in 11 points for the Majors.
The Scots will play in the state of Mississippi again on Saturday as they take on Rust College at 4:00pm. Covenant defeated Rust 77-75 earlier in the year. The next home game will Senior Night on Tuesday, February 15 at 8:00pm against LaGrange College.
