DECATUR, Ga. -- For the second night in a row, the Lady Scots traveled south to battle against a soon to be Great South Athletic Conference opponent; this time it was against the Scotties of Agnes Scott College. Coming off a large loss to Spelman, the Lady Scots were looking to get back on track as they squared off against the Scotties. Although the score was close at half with the 6 point margin favoring Agnes Scott, the game was lost for Covenant in the second half as the lead grew to 18 points before ending with a 12 point cushion at 62-50.
For the second straight game, the first points of the game were two made free throws for junior Hannah Craft. Following the Craft free throws, there were several made baskets for both teams as the defenses needed to get accustomed to each other before settling in for the night. Within the first 5 minutes, the Scotties had hit several shots in successive possessions and built their lead to 7 points. Their lead oscillated up and down but never grew higher than 7 as the Lady Scots continued to find ways to keep it close on the road.
Jessie Blankenship led the way for the Lady Scots with 10 of the team's 19 points. Blankenship shot 5-9 from the floor and grabbed a team high 5 rebounds. The rest of the team provided little offensive output; only 2 other players made a shot in the first half.
The second half started as one all too familiar to the Lady Scots basketball team this season. The team struggled to put the ball through the net, scoring on only one of its first 14 possessions. In the first 10:21 of the second half, the Lady Scots only managed 6 points since coming back from the locker room. In the remaining 9:39, Covenant found a way to outscore the Scotties 25-19, but this was still not enough. The Scotties lead had already swelled to its highest point of the night at 18.
Blankenship finished with 17 points and 7 rebounds. Junior Margaret Cross put in 10 points, all in the second half. After 3 straight wins, the Lady Scots have now lost two straight on the road.
With the rest of the weekend off to rest and recover, the team will wait until Tuesday, February 8 to travel with the men to Jackson, Mississippi to play Millsaps College.
