Tennis Teams Win at Home

CHATTANOOGA -- An easy win for the men doesn't always translate into an easy one for the women, but the Scots and Lady Scots both still found a way to take home victories over Maryville College Friday afternoon.  After the Scots made quick work of Maryville 9-0, the ladies spent nearly two more hours of court time in an effort to grab their own victory of 6-3.  With the wins, Covenant's tennis teams improve to 1-1 on the season.

The men came out strong in doubles and continued their domination all the way through to singles.  Their efforts saw the visiting Scots claim only 5 total games in doubles and a mere 9 in singles.  Junior John Hirte took a straight sets win at two singles (6-0, 6-0), while freshman Sean Guerry and Calvin Chase did the same at five and six.

The women, who suffered injuries to junior Casey Cochran and sophomore Kelsey Whitted during doubles, were forced to shuffle the line-up a bit, but 3-set wins at two and three singles helped the Lady Scots avoid any chance of a Maryville upset.  Freshmen Madeline Hyatt and Lauren Redberg indeed showed composure and poise not always characteristic of newcomers as they took home their first ever college singles victories.

Covenant's tennis team will travel to Atlanta, Georgia Saturday afternoon for a match against Methodist University.  Matches will be played on the courts of Oglethorpe University, beginning at 3:00pm.
