HOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. -- The Lady Scots were off to Mississippi once again on Saturday, this time for a rematch against the Lady Bearcats of Rust College. Back on January 22, Rust visited the mountain and came away with an 8 point victory, and their home gym proved even friendlier in February as they found a way to take down Covenant once again. The 65-49 decision is the Lady Scots 16th loss of the season and puts the team at 5-16 on the year as they enter Senior Night.
After starting the game slow, Covenant took the lead with a Margaret Cross three pointer at the 15:03 mark. On its next possession, Cross connected again to boost the advantage to 3, but that lead would not last long as the Lady Bearcats roared back with made baskets on 5 of their next 6 chances. Rust's lead peaked at seven before Covenant cut it back down to one, aided by two more Cross three pointers.
Standing at 22-21, Covenant was as close as they would get for the remainder of the game. The Lady Bearcats went on a 12-4 run to end the half at 34-25, then opened the lead up to as many as 18 in the second half. A pair of baskets plus two free throws by Christine Core in the early going of the second half helped the Lady Scots bring the deficit to 5, but Covenant did not seem to have the legs for a 40 minute game.
Cross finished with 16, including 4 of 10 from beyond the arc. Jessie Blankenship posted 12 points and 8 rebounds, and Christine Core added 3 assists to her 7 points.
Jessica Swanigan led the Lady Bearcats with 15 points.
The Lady Scots are back in action Tuesday evening for Senior Night, when Emily Dupree will be honored as the team's only senior. Game time is scheduled for 6:00pm against LaGrange College.
