MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Riding a two-game win streak for the first time in nearly three years, the Covenant Scots had every reason to be a confident bunch headed into their showdown against Great South Athletic Conference foe Huntingdon College on Wednesday night. But the Hawks took away any momentum the Scots had early in the game and cruised to a 73-51 win.
The game was originally supposed to be played on January 10, but was postponed due to a snow storm that swept across the south.
Huntingdon led for the entire game and was able to put away the Scots early. The Hawks led 17-6 just over four minutes into the contest after a three-pointer from Ephriam Hudson. Covenant's Damien Chaney drilled a three-pointer of his own just a few minutes later to bring the Hawks lead back under double digits at 19-11. But that was the last time the Scots trailed by fewer than 10 points the rest of the night. Hot shooting from Huntingdon, especially from Adrian Williams who went 8-10 from the field in the first half, put the Hawks out to a 47-29 halftime lead.
Things did not get any better for the Scots in the second 20 minutes. Huntingdon stretched their lead out to 34 at 71-37 with 8:07 left in the second half after a layup from Jason Varney. Covenant was able to make the score closer in the final 8 minutes as they went on a 14-2 scoring run to end the game.
Covenant (4-14) had no players score in double digits, but Zarome Lakey did score 8 points on 4-8 shooting to lead the Scots. Jon DeVries, Callum Sears, and Paul Werkema each had 7 points apiece.
Adrian Williams, coming off being named GSAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week, led all scorers with 24 points to go along with 8 rebounds and 6 blocks. Ephriam Hudson added in 10 points and 7 rebounds of his own for the Hawks (7-10).
Covenant will have less than 24 hours to recover from the loss as they return home to face Maryville College on Thursday at 8:00pm. Covenant was defeated by Maryville 88-76 in the previous meeting this year.
