DECATUR, Georgia -- Perhaps the biggest question that faced the Lady Scots on Saturday was how they would respond in the face of defeat. Coming off their first loss of the season one week ago, Covenant's Lady Scots soccer team needed to find a way to bounce back and prove to fans that the loss against Salem College on the road was in the past. After a solid 3-0 victory over Agnes Scott (2-7), it was clear that the week off was a benefit, and the well-rested Lady Scots (5-1) did not have any lingering effects from their latest road trip.
Although the game was dominated by Covenant, Agnes Scott managed a few attacks of its own, one of which came in the third minute when a shot by Kelsey Shaul sailed wide. For the next twelve minutes, though, the Lady Scots brought on the heat. Their attack started with a corner kick from Caitlin Ezell in the seventh minute and continued with numerous shots from Katelyn Newsome, Lauren Probst, and Kasey Craft.
Fresh legs came midway through the first half in the form of Amy Dykstra, Jane Shibley, Jill Schlink, and Kara Lee, two of the eventual goal-scorers, but the Lady Scots still struggled to get one past Agnes Scott goalkeeper, Mary-Kate Laird. Through the first forty-five minutes, Covenant had accumulated 12 shots, 4 of which required saves. Yet with the outpour of offensive prowess in the first half, the Lady Scots had nothing to show for it on the scoreboard.
This problem was quickly fixed in the second half when sophomore midfielder Kara Lee scored her first goal of the season in the fifty-sixth minute. Lee re-entered the game at the 55:06 mark and took only 31 seconds to convert the go-ahead, game-winning goal.
With the lead in hand, the Lady Scots looked for more. In the sixty-first minute, Caitlin Ezell's corner-kick connected with Jill Schlink for the game's second goal, also Schlink's first of the season. The goal put Covenant up 2-0, and the scoreboard finally reflected some of the dominance the Lady Scots had displayed throughout the majority of the game.
During the remaining minutes, Covenant kept the pressure up and earned one final goal off the foot of Lauren Probst. Caitlin Ezell was credited with her second assist of the day as she sent the ball across the face of the net, and Probst was able to take advantage of a goalie misplay.
With the victory in hand, the Lady Scots moved to 5-1 on the year. Their next game will be under the lights of Scotland Yard on Thursday at 8:00pm when Covenant will welcome Bryan College.
