LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- It was a battle of Lady Scots on Tuesday night at Barnes Gymnasium as Covenant's Lady Scots hosted the Maryville College Lady Scots. In a back and forth affair, Maryville was able to pull it out in the fifth and deciding set and win the match 3-2 (23-25, 28-26, 21-25, 25-19, 15-13).
Covenant fell behind early in the first set, but recovered from that with five straight points to take a 20-18 advantage. Maryville would come back and tie things up at 23, but two consecutive errors from Maryville gave Covenant the game win.
Covenant's Lady Scots started off very slowly in the second game and trailed 20-10 at one point. However, Covenant went on an impressive 12-0 run with Erica Adams recording five kills during the streak as the Lady Scots took a 22-20 lead. Maryville would answer and force a 25-25 tie and would eventually win the game, nullifying a great effort from Covenant.
Covenant looked poised to win the match after dominating the third game to go up 2-1 with a 25-21 victory. Maryville would once again bounce back, however, and win the fourth game handily to set the stage for the fifth and final game.
In the fifth game, Covenant grabbed an early 7-4 advantage aided by kills from
Emily Stewart and Kait Glass. Maryville cut the Covenant lead to 8-7 as the teams switched sides of the court, then pulled ahead 11-8 only to see Covenant answer with three straight points of their own to tie the score again. Maryville then got a kill from Jillian Galewski that put them up 12-11, and the visiting Lady Scots would never look back.
For the match, Covenant was again led by Erica Adams with her 18 kills. Jessie Jakes also had double digits in kills and digs with 13 and 17 respectively. Kristin Dahlstrand added 39 assists, and Paige Cheney chipped in 28 digs.
Maryville's Kristin Findley led all players with 22 kills, and Katherine Nadler had 31 digs.
With the loss Covenant sees it record drop to 3-5 on the year. The Lady Scots will hope to improve that record Friday night at home against Reinhardt University.
