LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Wins have not come easily for the Covenant College baseball team since its reinstatement in 2007, as two dismal six win seasons and an improving but nevertheless sub-par fifteen win season have haunted the Scots on the diamond for the past three years. 2010 was different, though, as the Scots managed to accumulate 19 wins en-route to their first five-hundred season in recent memory. "This year we just had a great group of guys who were able to come together and win some big games," said sophomore pitcher Tyler Smith. "We worked hard all season, and we'll keep looking to get better as we move into regionals and beyond." Indeed, the NCCAA World Series is an attainable goal for the Scots this year, and the team will be looking to advance to the big dance when they host the NCCAA Mid-East Regional at home beginning May 13th. "We're excited to be hosting the regional tournament," said junior Caleb Abney. "With home field advantage and a good crowd we can hopefully put a decent run together and extend our five-game win streak by another few games or so."
This five-game win streak could prove to be crucial for the Scots, who now head into the regional tournament having built up some much needed momentum while rallying from five games back to finish the season at a solid 19-19. It was a win streak that culminated this past weekend with a series sweep of AAC opponent Virginia Intermont, and it is a streak that also presented a proper ending to seniors Cody Baxter and Ty McTier's regular season careers. "I think we had a great year and I was happy to be a part of it," said Baxter. "This program is heading in the right direction, and hopefully we'll be able to add even more wins to the season record by going somewhere this post-season." The other senior, Ty McTier, also made his voice known over the weekend, albeit in a manner less common than Baxter's post-game quote. Dressed in his baseball uniform, the senior kicked off senior weekend with his own pre-game rendition of the Star Spangled Banner on his electric guitar. Always multi-talented, the senior then exchanged the guitar for a bat and glove, and took the field.
Friday saw the Scots play a doubleheader at Engel Stadium for fear that Saturday's games might be rained out. Tyler Smith started game one at pitcher for Covenant, and after allowing two runs early, found his form with two strikeouts and just two more runs allowed throughout the course of the game. At bat, the Scots put together a solid offensive effort spearheaded by a Cody Baxter double in the second, a Jared Carlson three-run homer in the third, and a Taylor Oldham two-run home run in the fourth. These runs scored in the three consecutive innings proved to be enough for the Scots in game one, and they were able to claim an 8-4 victory.
In game two, Andre Glover took the mound for the Scots and helped the team deliver a solid 9-0 performance. Glover's pitching allowed for only four hits from the Virginia Intermont squad, and the visitors went run-less all seven innings. A James Rollins home run and another Baxter double were the highlights of Covenant's offensive success in game two.
Game three experienced a fog-delay, but with a five-hundred record at stake, the Scots were willing to wait it out for a shot at 19-win glory. Demarius Johnson was starting pitcher in game three, while Brian Simons awaited his turn in the bullpen. Johnson had a hot arm through the first six innings, throwing five strikeouts and allowing just one run off six hits. Simons relieved him to begin the seventh, and managed to close the game out by allowing just one run in the eighth inning. The fact that the Scots allowed only two runs proved to be crucial, as the Covenant team experienced some offensive woes of their own throughout the fog-ridden day. A Harrison Fisher single, Jared Carlson's second home run on the weekend, and a Taylor Oldham double were just enough, though, for Covenant to claim a narrow game three victory over Virginia Intermont 3-2.
The series sweep complete, and a five-hundred record attained, the Scots officially concluded their 2010 season on a high note.
Taylor Oldham finished the year as the Scot's leader in home runs and RBIs, while
Demarius Johnson led all pitchers in strikeouts. Pitcher Andre Glover's 4.62 ERA was the lowest of the three starting pitchers, as he narrowly edged out
Tyler Smith's 4.83 average. With a May 13th playoff date now set in stone, the Scots will be hoping to extend both their personal stats and season win column when they host their opponents in a matter of days. "We can't wait for the Region game," said Smith. "We really want to get to the World Series." Hopefully, the Scots will be able to reach that goal, but with the team's best-ever season already under the belt, an NCCAA World Series trip would only be icing on the cake in a year of record-breaking successes.
