LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- After suffering a lapse in form during recent weeks, the Covenant College baseball team was able to return to winning ways on Wednesday with a 10-5 victory over the visiting UVA-Wise Cavaliers. Aside from being the Scot's second consecutive victory, the win is also relevant in that it means Covenant has already surpassed its 2009 season total of sixteen wins with two games still to play. Freshman Sterling Witt started this game on the mound for the Scots, and, even after enduring a rocky start during which he gave up four runs in the first three innings, was able to recover and pitch three strikeouts before giving way to Wes McDowell in the sixth. McDowell would do well to close the game out for the Scots, allowing only one run and throwing two strikeouts in the relief effort.
The true success on the day, though, was seen at home plate in Covenant's bat, where the Scots managed to crank out ten runs on just eight hits, with two of those hits being home runs that came in the first two innings of play. Taylor Oldham, who has had a strong hand for the Scots all year, started the day off with a bang, slamming a two-run homer over the fence after Harrison Fisher had reached first base on a walk. Jared Carlson would take note of this and respond with a two-run homer of his own in the bottom of the second to send both himself and James Rollins, who was on base after hitting a double, around the bases to cap off a six-run second inning for the Scots. Two more runs in the third inning all but sealed the deal for the Scots on a day in which the visiting Cavaliers failed to capitalize on their ten hits.
The victory over UVA-Wise now puts Covenant at 16-19 and sets them up to obtain a five-hundred record when they play Virginia Intermont in a three game series at home this upcoming weekend. Following the series, which marks Covenant's final games of the 2010 regular season, the Scots will in all likelihood begin post season play on May 13th in the NCCAA Mid-East Regional game.
