Covenant Suffers Series Sweep At The Hands Of Reinhardt

Lookout Mountain, GA-  The Covenant College baseball team hosted the Reinhardt College Eagles this past weekend, hoping that clear weather, home field advantage, and a winning record would aid them in their quest to triumph over their fellow AAC competitors.  The visiting Eagles entered Friday night's contest carrying a 17-19 record, while the Scot's boasted a 14-13 winning record on the season.  But, after Friday's lone match and a doubleheader on Saturday, those records were essentially swapped, as Reinhardt pulled off a series sweep of Covenant to advance to one game above five-hundred, while the Scots dropped to two below at 14-16.

Friday's action saw Tyler Smith retake the mound for Covenant, but the two strikeouts he pitched were not enough to overcome the five runs given up in the second inning, as a Jeremy Roberts home run gave the visiting Eagles an early advantage.  A series of costly errors and bad hitting also plagued the Scots on the day, as they ultimately lost the game 6-4 to fall back to five-hundred on the season.

If Friday was not a great day for the Scots, though, Saturday was about to get even worse.  Andre Glover threw three strikeouts and held Reinhardt scoreless through four innings, but a fifth inning double from the Eagles put them up 2-0.  Covenant responded in the bottom of the fifth with three runs of their own, but that was to be their only success on the day, as Reinhardt scored one more in the sixth and two off of relief pitcher Wes McDowell in the seventh to win the game 5-3.

Team strikeout leader Demarius Johnson pitched for Covenant in Saturday's finale, and added to his rising K total with seven more strikeouts on the evening.  However, Johnson and his defense surrendered three runs in the first inning and a two-run home run in the top of the fifth to fall into a hole from which they were never able to recover.  Even a late Sterling Witt home run was not enough to secure victory for the host Scots, as they dropped the series' third game by a second consecutive 5-3 scoreline.

Looking to get back to winning ways in their next match, Covenant will now travel to Tennessee Temple at 4:00 P.M. this Thursday.  The Scots previously defeated Temple by a 10-3 scoreline earlier this season.
