Scots Win 2 of Last 4 to Stay One Game Above Five-Hundred

MONTREAT, N.C.- In every cloud, a silver lining can still be found, and Friday's game one loss to AAC foe Montreat College revealed just that for the Covenant College baseball team.  After being one of the top performers for the Scots in recent weeks, sophomore pitcher Tyler Smith struggled through the game one opener against the host Cavaliers, giving up seven runs, including four in the bottom of the seventh inning.

"It wasn't my best day," said Smith after the game, "hopefully I can get back on track in the next one."

The team, though, looked right past the gloomy 8-6 Friday loss, and found the silver lining in the form of pitchers Andre Glover and Demarius Johnson on day two.  You see, the good thing about having three high-caliber pitchers is that when one struggles, you still have a chance for the other two to step up and prove their worth.  Andre Glover, who started Saturday's first game on the mound for the Scots, took that chance, and continued his fine season form by allowing eight hits and two runs in the 9-2 Covenant victory.  His three strikeouts were aided by solid offensive efforts from James Rollins, Taylor Oldham, Sterling Witt, and Luke Furuto, as the Scots easily clinched game two of the series.

With the series all square at one game apiece, Saturday's game two would prove to be the deciding contest.  On the mound was Covenant pitcher Demarius Johnson, who led the team with 29 strikeouts on the year, and at bat for Covenant, was Luke Furuto, whose two-run homer in the top of the first got the Scots off to a good start and a 5-0 lead after two innings.

The team would keep the 5-0 cushion through the top of the third, where it would then extend it to thirteen with an eight run slug-fest that was capped off by freshman Sterling Witt's three run homer.  It was the first of his young career, and it put Covenant in pole position to end the game early via the ten-run rule.  After Johnson struck out two batters in the fourth, and Oldham hit his team-leading sixth home run of the season in the top of the fifth, victory was all but guaranteed, and the Scots cruised to a 14-2 win in just five innings.  Johnson ended the game with six strikeouts and just three hits allowed.

Now a full two games above five-hundred, Covenant entered Tuesday's game against Maryville College with hopes of adding yet another "w" to its 14-12 record.  Sterling Witt started at pitcher for Covenant, and threw for the first four innings before giving way to Wes McDowell.  Indeed, allowing six runs in those first four innings was not what Witt had envisioned on the day, but luckily the offense, led by Taylor Oldham's home run in the first inning, managed to put up eight points through the four periods for an 8-6 Covenant lead.  The visiting Scots then tacked on four more in the fifth, but Maryville responded with nine runs through the sixth and seventh innings to take a 15-12 lead, and ultimately, the game, as Covenant's relief pitchers were unable to get the job done.

The Scots were also held hitless through the last four innings, but still remain on the winning side of things at 14-13 on the year.  Covenant will next play Reinhardt College at home this Friday.
