Lookout Mountain, GA- Game one of the 2010 Covenant College baseball season saw the Scots travel down to Rome, Georgia, and lose to Berry College by a score of 10-5. So, with Wednesday's game being a rematch of that same opening day fixture, the challenge presented by the visiting Berry College Vikings would serve as both a test to see how much the Scots had improved, and as a chance for the team to break free from its 9-9 record.
Sterling Witt started on the mound for Covenant, and allowed no hits in the top of the first. Covenant's offense then capped off the solid opening inning with Taylor Oldham hitting a first pitch 3 run home-run. It was yet another home-run for the sophomore shortstop, who currently holds player of the week honors in the AAC, and it put the home team up 3-0 through the first inning. Berry, though, would respond with two strong innings, claiming two runs in the second and four in the third to take a 6-3 lead as Covenant's offense sputtered.
After both teams failed to score a run in the fourth inning, Covenant finally regained its composure in the bottom of the fifth, as hits by Harrison Fisher, Luke Furuto, and Jonathan Carter led to two runs for the Scots. However, Berry was able to extend its lead in the sixth with a single run, and after both teams scored one run in the seventh, the visiting Vikings still held a slim lead. At the top of the eighth, Wes McDowell entered the contest to pitch for the Scots, and did not allow a run for the remainder of the game while throwing the Scot's only strikeout on the afternoon.
Jonathan Carter then hit a home-run in the bottom of the eighth to pull the Scots within one run of drawing level, but two groundouts and a strikeout in the ninth doomed the Scots to the loss and a 9-10 season record. The Scots will now travel to Bluefield over Easter weekend to participate in a three game series.
