Berry Tops Covenant 2-0

ROME, Ga. -- In collegiate sports, home field advantage is something hard to overcome, and the Lady Scots had their work cut out for them when they took to the road to face Berry College last Saturday.  With high hopes, the Lady Scots entered the game looking to avenge a 1-0 loss from early November of last year.  But a failure to gain momentum on offense sent the team home with a 2-0 loss, the team's third of the year away from Scotland Yard.

From the opening kickoff, Berry seemed to be forcing the issue early with several shots in the first fifteen minutes.  As play continued, the battle was moved to the mid-field as both teams started getting the ball up and down the field with regularity.  The stout Lady Scots defense took on the challenge of bending but not breaking as it limited Berry to contested shots and shots from long distance.  The first half was ultimately a half full of attacks and counterattacks with the Lady Scots advancing the ball up the field, but getting shots off was something of a struggle throughout the majority of the game.

Inside the last minute of the first half, Berry had a free kick opportunity and made the most of it.  The free kick was served far post and found the foot of one of Katie O'Brien and eventually the back of the net.  With only seconds left on the clock after the goal, the score at the end of the first half was 1-0 in favor of Berry.

The second half started with immediate action as the Lady Vikings attempted their second corner kick in the first three minutes.  Off the re-start, the ball was put into the box amongst the larger number of offensive and defensive players, and with little notice, the ball flew out of the group and passed Bethany Holman for a two goal lead.

The Lady Scots did not stop fighting for the remainder of the second half as they continued to push the ball through the mid-field looking for scoring chances.  Through tough conditions- cold weather and strong wind- Covenant battled to the end, but as the final buzzer expired, the score still read Berry 2, Covenant 0.

The Lady Scots have one game remaining in the regular season this coming Wednesday, November 10 at Division III Birmingham Southern College.  After that, they will await seeding for the NCCAA Mid-East region tournament, which will take place November 19-20.
