The Scots continue to execute at the plate as they sweep Shorter at home. Jason Pope (1-3), Taylor Oldham (2-3), Jared Carlson (2-3), Blaine Newton (1-2), Sam Hogan (2-3), and Thomas O'Ban (1-3) all had consistant turns at the plate.
Inning after inning, the Scots put it together in key situations. In the third inning, Hogan singled, Whitehead gave himself up with the sac bunt advancing Hogan to second. Hogan took third on a passed ball and scored on a well placed ground ball to the right side. In the sixth inning, Oldham doubled and Carlson singled him in; Newton found his way on with a base hit. Both Carlson and Newton advanced on a groundball, and Hogan connected for the 2 RBI single. The performance on the rubber matched the performance at the plate. Starter Chris Greer threw 5.2 innings with eight strikeouts allowing only one earned run. Wes McDowell closed out the remainder of the game and shut down Shorter to earn the save and to seal the victory 5-2.
In game two, the Scots seemed to have a few tired arms on the mound, but the bats certainly made up for it: Oldham (1-3), Hogan (3-6, 2 RBI), Furuto (1-3), and J. Frederick (1-3). In the first inning, Pope walked, Oldham singled him to second, and Pope later scored on a passed ball. In the fifth inning, the Scots were down 3-9, but refusing to accept defeat, the Scots put six runs on the board to tie it all up. Shorter and Covenant traded runs in the sixth and seventh innings and went silent in the eighth. But in the bottom of the ninth inning, Sam Hogan hit the walk-off single to win it 12-11.
Now on a three game win streak, the Scots look to carry the momentum into this weekend's three-game series against Bryan College here on Lookout Mountain (Fri @ 2 pm and Sat @ 12 pm).
