Covenant Drops Three to Milligan

On Friday night's game, the Scots started out well taking the lead in the early innings. In the second inning, Carlson singled, courtesy runner Hagopian stole second base and then advanced to third on a wild back-pick. Hogan then came through with the sac fly to score Hagopian. In the third inning, Whitehead led things off with a hit by pitch. He then advanced to third base on a two base throwing error. A deep sac fly then scored Whitehead. Those were the only runs the Scots could manufacture. The starting pitching staff gave into the Buffalos hard hitting bats giving up six earned runs in 3.1 innings of work. Reliever Chris Greer then shut them allowing only one earned one in 4.2 innings of work. Unfortunately the damage had been done and the Scots could not recover in the 2-7 loss.

On Saturday afternoon, the Scots bats woke up: Pope (1-3), O'Ban (1-4, RBI), Oldham (2-3), Carlson (2-3 double), Newton (1-2), Cline (2-3), Fisher (1-3, RBI). Although the Scots seemed to be getting on base often, they had trouble stringing them together to get some runs. Once again the Scots could only muster up two runs in the fifth inning. McTier took one for the team (hit-by-pitch) after which Cline singled. Fisher then connected for the RBI double, and O'Ban also drove in a run with a line drive single. The defense, however, collapsed and could not stop the Buffalos. The starting pitching gave up two earned runs in four innings. Gray came out of the pen for two innings with no earned runs. It was the four unearned runs that hurt the Scots in the 2-6 defeat.

In the third and final game of the series, the Scots looked to end with a big win going into the conference tourney. The offense came alive and put things together well: O'Ban (2-4), Hogan (1-3), Oldham (2-3, 1 RBI), Carlson (2-3, two doubles, 3 RBI), Newton (1-3, RBI double). In the first inning, O'Ban singled, Hogan drew the walk, and Oldham singled. Carlson then doubled in two runs. In the third inning, the Scots scored four more runs to take a one run lead. Hogan started it off with a single, Oldham then doubled Hogan in; Carlson doubled Oldham in. Pope then hit the RBI single followed by Newton's RBI double. Although the bats got it done, the starting pitching wasn't on task again giving up ten earned runs in 4.2 innings. McDowell then came out of the pen for 0.2 IP with two earned runs followed by Roberts who also threw 0.2 innings with one earned run. In the sixth inning the Scots gave out allowing the winning run across in the 6-16 loss.

Despite a rather disappointing weekend, the Scots will work hard in practice this week as they prepare for the conference tourney in Kingsport, TN this coming weekend. The Scots will open it up against Bryan College on Friday at 3pm
