With an ominous sky threatening to rain, the CC Scots take two losses against King College (3-4, 5-6). The Scots jumped out to an early start scoring two runs in the first inning.
Blain Newton hit an RBI triple to score Sam Hogan, and Taylor Oldham laced an RBI single into left field to score Newton. In the top of the second inning, Sam Hogan ripped an RBI single to score Luke Furuto. Once again, the Scots pitching staff threw a gem. Chris Henegar gave up only three earned runs in four innings, and Nolan Gray threw the last two innings giving up one earned run. Unfortunately the Scots were unable to score more than three runs despite Luke Furuto's leadoff double in the top of the sixth inning. The Tornado came away with the 4-3 win in the end.
Frustrated with the previous game's loss, the Scots came out with all the motivation they needed to put forth their best effort. The Scots racked up a total of nine hits. Blaine Newton went 2-3 (2 RBI), Colby Duckett went 1-3, Sam Hogan went 1-3, Luke Furuto went 1-1, and Jared Carlson came up big with 3-3 (1 RBI). Brent Neas came out strong, threw 6.1 innings, and gave up only 3 earned runs. The superb batting performance certainly matched the pitching today, but the combination wasn't enough. A few questionable calls and a few bounces falling for the Tornado and the Scots came out on the losing side 5-6.
A big rainstorm postponed the final game of this series until the next Tuesday afternoon. Traveling back up still on the hunt for their first conference win, the Scots came away empty-handed in the 5-9 loss. At the plate, Ty McTier went 1-1 (triple, 3 RBI), Jason Pope went 2-5 (single, solo HR), John Frederick went 1-3, Taylor Oldham went 2-4, Thomas O'Ban went 2-2, and Harrison Fisher went 1-3. Although the bats did well, the starting pitching staff struggled for the first four innings. But James Roberts and Wes McDowell came out of the pen and shut the Tornado's bats down for the final innings. Unfortunately the damage had already been done and the Scots came away loosing 5-9.
Despite the three losses to King College, the Scots gained the much needed confidence by holding the Tornado close in each game. This weekend the Scots look to sweep Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, VA (Fri @ 1:00 p.m. and Sat @ 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.).
