Barbourville, KY - The Scots saw their 2008-2009 season come to an end Wednesday night in a loss to the Montreat College Cavaliers. Losing by a score of 77-87 in double overtime, Covenant played hard but couldn't hang on for the duration of the contest and pick up the win. They went into halftime with a thirteen point lead, up 40-27, but saw the score flip-flop in the second half before heading to the game's first overtime period. After each team scored six points, the game went to a second overtime where the Cavaliers pulled away, outscoring the Scots by ten and ultimately taking the game.
Individually, four Scots ended up in double figures in the scoring column. Senior Reed Crosson, fresh off of a 34-point performance on Covenant's Senior Night, led Covenant with eighteen points. He also grabbed five rebounds and dished out three assists in nearly 42 minutes. Sophomore Davis Eldridge scored fourteen points but failed to hit a three-pointer for the first time since a November 25th game versus Berry College. Fellow sophomore Stephen Johnson had arguably his best game of the year, scoring twelve points and grabbing eight rebounds in 39 minutes while sophomore Dominique McGaughhey scored ten points and had seven assists. Freshman Brock Barber contributed with seven points, seven rebounds and a season-high tying six blocks.
Montreat center Seth Moore led the Cavaliers with fourteen points, fifteen rebounds, four blocks and two steals while guard MJ Njoku scored nineteen points.
The Scots end their season with a record of 2-29 but dealt with personnel issues all year including a season-ending injury to the team's senior leader Chris Hall with a handful of important conference games remaining on the schedule. Covenant does have a lot to look forward to, however, after seeing growth from a number of freshman and sophomore players and will look for a big improvement in the 2009-2010 season.
